My son as a Ben 10 action figure

I made a custom repaint of a Ben 10 Ben Tennyson action figure for my sons 5th birthday.

My son is really into Ben 10. I think he identifies with the boy a lot because he’s young and he’s a smart-aleck. I think he also likes the idea of getting a super cool alien device that would give him alien powers.

I think Ben 10 action figures are the same for my son as the Kenner Star Wars action figures were to me. This year, I decided to do a repaint of the Ben Tennyson (the Ben 10) figure to make it look like my son. As I mentioned in a previous post, my son is able to recognize any wild-haired brunette boy as himself. So, I decided to buy an extra Ben 10 figure and repaint it to look like my son.

Here is what the original figure looks like:

I decided to repaint it to look like my sons red shirt with white sleeves with khaki cargo pants. I also decided to reshape the hair. I would also change the omnitrix wristwatch-style alien device to look like a purple sweatband with a baseball embroidered on it that my son got from Chuck E Cheese.

I had to grind off the vertical stripe from Ben’s t-shirt to make the shirt look smooth. I used red Rustoleum plastic spray paint.

I also took off the pointy tufts of hair on top of the original figures head and repainted it. The brush I used also added some texture. I also used a marker to change the eye color from green to brown.

For the long sleeves, I decided to use Sculpey. Sculpey is a polymer plastic that hardens when you heat it to 200 F. It worked fine, but check out the shrinkage that occurred:

Oops! I didn’t realize the plastic from the figure would be affected like that. The arms still work, though. I used a plastic paint to coat the sleeves and repaint the wristband.

The new wristband.

Repainting the legs was a pain. I used a beige Rustoleum plastic paint but it didn’t stick very well. I had even tried to buff off any coatings with my Dremel tool, but it didn’t help. I had to do coat after coat of spray paint. It was pretty tedious trying to cover the whole surface.

Here is the final figure.

Next time I think I would do something different with the paint. I’ll have to do more research.

  1. awesome! If your son watches Cartoon Network, he may recognize this as the clothing scheme of Mac from Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends( minus the watch)

  2. Good work and i like the way you did the hair and omnitrix. You must
be very good at art then?Hope to see more of your excellent figures
like that one of your son.whatsyour son’s name?

  3. How come you painted the omnitrix puple and white???.you could of just painted the omnitrix all white and then make it the whole sleeve down to the wrist

  4. WOW! OMG! AMAZING!!!!!!! I WOULD TOTALLY BUY THAT FOR LIKE 20$ BUT NO HIGHER THAN THAT…. WHEN THE BEN TEN ALIEN FORCE( THE NEW BEN 10 SERIES BUT IT TAKES PLACE 5 YEARS LATER) FIGURES COME OUT, YOU SHOULD REPAINT IT! MAKE IT LOOK COOL…ER! P.S. THE BEN 10 ALIEN FORCE SERIES WILL BE AIRING APRIL 18 ON CARTOONETWORK!!!

  5. Wow, now that’s some pretty nice crafting on your part. I’m a bit of a Ben 10 fan, as well as an artist, so naturally I’m impressed. The only bit of criticism I have is the effect on the clothing from the spray paint, making the shirt and pants (as well as hair, now that I think about it) a little too shiny. But it doesn’t ruin it, I still think this was a great gift for your son. Reminds me of when I made a drawing of Ben and Four-Arms for my little cousin on his tenth b-day (he’s a huge fan as well).
Do you have any other projects you’ve been working on? I would love to see more of your work.

  6. @Steven, I have been working on something with Mighty World figures, but nothing with Ben 10 aliens. If the Gwen figure didn’t have the mask, I might make one look like my sons friend, though.

Some of the _new_ aliens look so cool. 🙂

Thanks to everyone for the comments!

  7. Wow. That’s really cool! You took an action figure and just painted over it? That’s awesome! I want one! lol

  8. man i wish i could do this to toys. 1st of id need toys as i dont have any since my parent threw em out. any way. this is really good but a minor critisism is that u shouldnt have painted the watch as it doesnt look as good now but apart from that brill. you should get the aliens and alter them slightly to be like ur son. like colours ect.if his shirts red, make x l r 8 red
    keep it up 😉
    bye

  9. Amazing,Most of boys want to looks like a Superhero and your son dream now comes tru. I think your son got one of the best gift in his life. First mom devoted much time and make a hand made figure of him and second he will look much similar to ben10 in figures.

  10. Hey how can I contact you my son wants a Mac action figure and I cant find it anywhere maybe you can make me one?

  11. G’Day! Ericholsinger,
Speaking of which, In the original series, Ben’s alien Diamondhead was the species Petrosapian. Now, his new alien is a Crystalsapian. Does he totally replace Diamonhead, or what? They seem really similar.

Also, can anyone explain to me why Ben doesn’t have his aliens from the past, or why Kevin is a good guy now? In an episode of Ben 10 (in the future), it shows Ben 10,000 fighting Kevin when he’s still a bad guy who had to be released by his son, Devon or something, he was all huge and locked in the Null Void for that whole time. That is so confusing! Or, like I already said, why does Ben no longer have Four Arms, or Upchuck, or Heatblast, or Benvicktor, or anyone else!? I loved all those guys! I read on Wikipedia that after 5 years he had to put the Omnitrix back on. Why did he take it off?! If I were him, I’d keep that thing on my whole life! Wouldnt you?

    Thanks!

Also, does anyone know why they haven’t made action figures of Ditto, Eye Guy, or Way Big? Or even Grandpa Max or regular Gwen?
