Milestones
I was going through some CDs I have of scanned slides. I found some photos that are real milestones in my photography. As such, they hold a special place in my heart.
One is a sunrise I shot at Camp Ellis, Maine. It was Winter, January or February, of 2003. I went very early and took a photo, with a tripod, of the sunrise. The sunrise was just incredible. The sky and river were awash in soft pink and purple hues. I knew I had to expose the Fuji Velvia 50 for a long time, but I didn’t know how long. I metered for what I wanted to be the neutral part of the sky and let the camera do the rest. Here is the photo:

You can see the swirling ice in the foreground. The river was turned into cotton candy by the long exposure. The biggest problem, I think, is the boat. The boat was moving too much for the exposure time. It looks fuzzy.
But this photo is very special to me. I think it’s probably the first photo of mine that I liked. Even with the fuzzy little boat. When I found this on the CD, I just stared at it. I may never see a sky like that again.
