10th Annual Beach to Beacon 10k

The TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10k was exciting with Duncan Kibet, of Kenya making a move to overtake the top three runners in the last leg of the race after entering Fort Williams Park.

Kenyan Evans Cheryiout leads the pack into Fort Williams, followed closely by John Yuda of Tanzania. Duncan Kibet, of Kenya waits to make the winning move behind Meb Keflezighi, of San Diego, California.

I took a lot more photos of the runners and the crowd at the race today. The images are uploaded at MaineToday.com.

Normally I would heap all the images together in one gallery, but this time I separated them into different sub-galleries.

4th Annual Latino Soccer Tournament

I took photos of the 2007 Latino Soccer Tournament at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, Maine.

This photo is of a little girl in traditional dress. She was with Nelida Berke, who organized the event. She looked so beautiful in the colorful dress.

The Latino Soccer Tournament has been held annually for the past 4 years, since 2004. The City of Portland’s Public Health program sponsors the event to promote health and disease prevention.

Silly Sparkler Stuff, Long Exposure Photography

We were outside playing around with Sparklers in the yard and I played around with some long exposures. The principle is the same as shooting fireworks on the 4th of July or Independence Day.

Clifford Park Assault, EFTA NECS Mountain Bike Race

On June 24th, I took photos of the 2007 Clifford Park Assault EFTA (Eastern Fat Tire Association) NECS (New England Championship Series) mountain bike race. The race is held at Clifford Park in Biddeford, Maine and is hosted by the Cape Able Bike Shop in Kennebunkport, Maine.

From what I hear, the Clifford Park Assault is a pretty rugged, grueling race. I found it to be really fun to take photos since I could run around and capture different parts of the race. But it’s pretty long, so I didn’t get to shoot photos of as many laps as I did at the Rotary Park Short Track in Biddeford, last year.

Here are some photos from the race.

Big Bone Lick

While traveling through Kentucky I couldn’t resist visiting Big Bone Lick State Park. My wife and I joked together about how fun it would be to wear a t-shirt that simply said “Big Bone Lick” in large letters with “State Park” in small letters below it. As it turns out, the idea was not lost to the folks who design the gift shop merchandise and I got my t-shirt. I also learned a few things about the area, too.

The first thing I noticed was a sign about Lewis and Clark. Lewis and Clark had visited the area to collect specimens for President Jefferson on their expedition West. Apparently, Big Bone Lick was a famous site of thousands of fossilized bones of prehistoric mammals. The bones reportedly were scattered across the valley and visible or lying on the surface. So that is where the Big Bone part comes from; Big Bones of prehistoric mammals.

There is a paved path to walk with informational plaques. The informational plaques are interesting and tell you about the history of the area, but the locations of the plaques is unclear as to the purpose. The plaque is positioned as if you were supposed to read it and then look past it as something relevant to the words on the plaque. In a couple places we had no idea what we were supposed to see that was related to what we just read.

Apparently the water in the area was/is salty and full of minerals. The animals came here to drink up the yummy water. Apparently this is the lick.

The Native Americans used to extract salt from the water. Later the water was boiled away in wood fired salt furnaces to extract the salt commercially. The area also enjoyed a period of time as a famous health resort where people would bathe in and drink the sulfurous water for it’s purported healing qualities. Very little of the marshy quagmire and treacherous wet earth exists today.

Big Bone Lick, Salty Marsh

The little stagnant looking stream is milky white; presumably from the mineral content. But the stream is difficult to imagine supporting a industry of salt furnaces turning out 60 bushels of salt per day.

The park has some unexpected inhabitants: a herd of bison are kept in the park. When we were there, the bison had been moved from a smaller fenced area to a larger one because they had trampled the pasture so much. It was easy to see them anyway.

Big Bone Lick, Bison in Woods

The Bison were lying in the shade of the trees. As we approached, the herd started moving out of the shade into the open field. Just on the other side of the trees was a paddock for rounding them up. The background settings was terrible, but the visibility was great. The bull was the proud papa of 4 little brown baby bison.

The big bull bison just lumbered around the females sniffing and showing flehmen behavior. In retrospect I should have taken of photo of him in the flehmen pose. Drat!

The National Park Service has an interesting page with more information about Big Bone Lick State Park.

Shooting after a rain storm – the Cascade Falls Trail, Saco, Maine

With the warmer weather, I have been itching to get outside and take some photos. Things are getting greener and the animals are active; it’s all very exciting for the Nature Photographer. But, this past weekend was really rainy here in Southern Maine.

Even so, I managed to get out for a while to hike the Cascade Falls Trail with my family and our neighbors children. Because of the rain I was able to get some good shots of the waterfall. The recent rain really brought this little cascade to life. The moisture and overcast skies helped saturate the colors of the moss and plants, too.

Rare Pink Lady’s Slippers were out. There was a big patch of them in an area about 20 feet in diameter on the side of a hill near the trail. My wife also found some Jack in the Pulpits, but I didn’t get any good shots of them.

The kids found a little bullfrog sitting on a log. The bullfrog seemed to think he was completely invisible. He didn’t move despite the frantic and wild efforts of three kids trying their best to get him to hop.

Photoshoot: wedding announcement photos for my sister and her fiancé

I had the honor of shooting the wedding announcement photos from my sister and her fiancé. I have recently bought a bunch of studio-style equipment which made possible what would have been absolutely impossible before. I’m still not very good at using the equipment, but thankfully I was able to pull off a few decent shots with their patience and trust.

After the portrait session, I took some time to process the RAW images. I also played around with some presentation options, especially insets into the bigger photograph.

Most of the work was on the exposure, cropping and playing with the filters in the black and white conversions. For the kissing portrait, I cropped it close and made it grainier for the photo CD that I gave them.

Freestyle Motocross at Cumberland County Civic Center

On Friday night, I took my family to see Freestyle Motocross at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine.

Freestyle Motocross at Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland Maine, by Eric Holsinger

I remember that there were a lot of kids at the Freestyle Motocross show at Oxford Plains Speedway. A lot of little kids were there.

The show was pretty dramatic, as all FMX shows must be. Unfortunately, Jason Rowe hit the front of the landing ramp and was out on the floor for a while. My son was initially unaffected by it, but as time went by with the paramedics working on him and preparing him to move, he got more and more upset. When everyone cheered for Jason and he gave us some devil horns back, my son broke out in panicked tears. We’ve talked about it a lot since. He doesn’t really dig noise from crowds anyway.

So, we hope Jason is OK and I posted some photos of the crowd in the MaineToday.com Seen photoblog.

Lost Valley Snowboard and Ski Photos

Brandon McCleod, Lost Valley Ski Area, by Eric Holsinger

I went to Lost Valley Ski Area to see if the Mountain Dew Series would be happening. The snow was wasn’t good enough for racing today, but some guys were building up a snowboard jump when I got there. I took photos for MaineToday.com’s Seen photoblog for about three hours. I posted some of the better photos to my gallery page under “action“. All of the photos from today are posted on MaineToday.com, but the photos are only 800×600, there. The photos in my gallery are about 50% of the original size.

Some guys from Vertical Outlaws were there. I took some photos of them, from the stands, at the Boost/Rockstar Freestyle Motocross show at Oxford Plains Speedway, last year. Even though the weather was probably good enough to have the bikes out, they were hitting the slopes, today.

I also got to meet some of the guys from Team Snomad. I got some pretty cool photos of Brandon McLeod, Dustin Harley and Drew Stretton, today.

I didn’t get most of the names of the skiers and riders. If anyone wants me to put their name to their picture on MaineToday.com, just post a note below.
