We were outside playing around with Sparklers in the yard and I played around with some long exposures. The principle is the same as shooting fireworks on the 4th of July or Independence Day.

With the warmer weather, I have been itching to get outside and take some photos. Things are getting greener and the animals are active; it’s all very exciting for the Nature Photographer. But, this past weekend was really rainy here in Southern Maine.
Even so, I managed to get out for a while to hike the Cascade Falls Trail with my family and our neighbors children. Because of the rain I was able to get some good shots of the waterfall. The recent rain really brought this little cascade to life. The moisture and overcast skies helped saturate the colors of the moss and plants, too.

Rare Pink Lady’s Slippers were out. There was a big patch of them in an area about 20 feet in diameter on the side of a hill near the trail. My wife also found some Jack in the Pulpits, but I didn’t get any good shots of them.

The kids found a little bullfrog sitting on a log. The bullfrog seemed to think he was completely invisible. He didn’t move despite the frantic and wild efforts of three kids trying their best to get him to hop.

After attending the Portland Camera Club meeting lastnight, I was motivated to go try some night photography before going home. I went to Portland’s Wharf Street, which has a lot of character. I took my tripod, my remote shutter cable and my Sigma 12-24mm lens on the Canon EOS 10D body.

In the photo above, I was trying to get the street lamps vanishing into the distance, and the cool, overhead-lit door to my right. But, what I didn’t count on – and didn’t notice when I was on the street – is that the overhead light seems to be creating all these blue spots on the image.
Check this image below for a larger version showing the blue spots in the image above.

I did manage to get this photo, though. This one doesn’t have the benefit of the cool door with the overhead lighting, but at least it’s not covered in blue spots.
