I don’t know if TomTom has seen the iPhone store prices lately, but I’m having a $100 sticker shock, right now.
I’ve been interested in seeing the TomTom app for iPhone since it was announced at Apple WWDC keynote. The idea of navigating from one convergent device is really appealing. However, I already have a GPS for my car, so almost all of the scenarios I could think of using TomTom for iPhone would be almost a novelty. For that reason, $100 is way too expensive for an app I’m unlikely to use if I have any time to prepare myself. I’m just not that desperate for turn-by-turn navigation on the fly. Especially if I can get to Google maps; I’ll find a way to make it work.
Admittedly, the iPhone alone isn’t an ideal device for GPS navigation if you’re planning on actually using it while you’re driving. You’ll need a window mount, a charger, a speaker – oh and probably an external GPS receiver. This has lead TomTom to offer an iPhone assisted solution, The TomTom Car Kit. The TomTom Car Kit also seems like it would be a perfect accessory. But the Car Kit is expected to retail for $200.
At $300, if you don’t already have a GPS, then maybe it would be worth it. For myself, I don’t think I’ll get the TomTom for iPhone after all.
